Jeep J8 Not Available To Civilians

The Jeep J8 is a heavy-duty military specification Wrangler that has the ability to drive in the middle of a sandstorm for over five hours and through water that is 30 inches deep. The production version for the J8 will make its official debut during the Euro Jeep Camp 2008. However, there is some disappointing news that will come with this unveiling. Jeep has no plans to offer the J8 to civilians.

The Jeep J8 is powered by a 158-horsepower 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. One of its chief attributes is its shape-shifting ability. Jeep said it is available as a two-door with an extended-bed pickup or as a four-door multipurpose vehicle. It can be built with “numerous vehicle-body and seating configurations in either right-hand or left-hand drive,” the automaker said in a statement. “The two-door version can be configured as a personnel carrier with seating for up to eight,” said Jeep.

Jeep underscores that the vehicle is not “designed for front-line combat operations.” However, it is “armor capable,” and such features as tow eyes and heavy-duty bumpers mean it can be carried by an airplane or helicopter.

The frame of the Wrangler Unlimited has been reinforced for extra ruggedness and to allow payloads up to a maximum of 2,756 pounds. The J8 also gets a unique air-intake system with special filtration and a hood-mounted air inlet that enables the J8 to ford water.

The new J8 will go on sale this month.
